Social media became part of our everyday lives.

There are many positive aspects of social media sites as they have changed our lives for the better.

However, there are some negatives that may overshadow the positives, and you need to be aware of them.

The first thing you have to remember is that all of the social media sites are being run by business people, who are looking to make a lot of money off of you.

The social media companies are putting in a lot of time, effort and money to attract you to their sites and to have you coming back often.

They do this so that they can make money by showing you sponsored content and advertisements.

Being on social media sites during work, can cost you a great promotion. Losing out on a good promotion due to your social media use, will cause you to lose a lot of money.

Sadly, it might also get you fired.

It is important to set limits. Think about how much time you want to spend going through your social media accounts every day.

Then set yourself a time limit and place where you want to spend time looking through your social media accounts. For example; on the bus or train ride to and from work.

Don’t do it during work as it can cost you money by being less productive.

Studies have shown that many people are now busy with social media during work and their productivity is suffering greatly.

One study showed that 51 percent of chief financial officers (CFO) who were interviewed, said that their greatest concern is that employees are wasting time during business hours using sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Think about this every time you check your social media account during work. It is costing you money because you are less productive and in return, you are a less valuable employee, which may get you fired.

Calculate the amount of money social media is costing you.

On average, a person spends 600 hours a year on social media sites. If you earn $10 an hour, then social media is costing you $6,000 a year.

Every minute you spend on social media could have been used to make more money by working or taking on another job.

When you spend time on social media at home, it keeps you from spending quality time with family and friends.

By spending less time on social media, you will have more time to strengthen relationships with those who are close to you.

Set yourself an appropriate amount of time to spend on social media without it interfering with other important tasks.

Then see how you feel after doing so.

Does reading the social updates make you feel more happy?
Do the sites get you in a great and relaxing mood?
Do your friends share interesting and uplifting things?

If you answer “no” to any of these questions, then stop wasting your precious time. Remove friends who post things that bring you down.

Don't let social media disturb your sleep. Being tired will disrupt your day and cost you money. Are the social media updates really worth it?
