(Scroll down for video) A woman called police after hearing a man screaming from behind her kitchen wall.
Gjyste Margilaj, 33, of New York, heard a loud noise in her kitchen before hearing someone screaming for help.
Margilaj went to the kitchen vent in her first-floor apartment on 220 E. 26th Street in Manhattan, where she heard the man panting and breathing heavily.
She removed the vent and found a man in the wall. Margilaj called for help.
Police and firefighters arrived to the scene and it took them 45 minutes to free the man, who was in his underwear, after removing the wall.
The 30-year-old man, who has not been named, recently moved into the fourth-floor apartment of the seven-story building, where the incident occurred.
On the night of the incident, the man was hanging out with some friends on the roof of the building. At some point, he decided to slide down the ventilation system to get to the swimming pool in the basement.
Things did not go as he planned. He fell to the first floor and became trapped.
Margilaj said that the man was not coherent at all. “He was saying that he and his friends were playing around, and that he is a doctor. I asked him if he was on drugs and he said ‘no,’” Margilaj said.
He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where it was reportedly confirmed that he was not drunk. He was treated for minor injuries and released.
FDNY Battalion Chief Patrick Tansey wrote on Facebook that the shaft was so small that the patient's body took up the entire space.
“We removed the wall and shaft by hand. We used tin snips, a tool used to cut metal, and dulled all the edges before we took him out,” Tansey wrote.
