(Scroll down for video) Police in Illinois, have released shocking footage, showing a black man being thrown to the ground and placed in handcuffs after they believed that he stole his own vehicle.
The incident began in 2015, when a woman in Evanston, Chicago, called police to report that a man was trying to break into a car.
The woman said that she saw the black man holding a metal bar while prying open the car.
Many police officers responded to the call and they pulled over the driver, Lawrence Crosby, then 25.
Crosby came out of his car with his hands in the air. Officers who had their guns drawn at him, ordered Crosby to get back into his car before he was tackled to the ground, beaten and handcuffed.
When Crosby demanded to know why he was being detained, an officer explained that the car was stolen. Crosby told officers that he owned the car and that it was registered in his name.
While he was still on the ground with many officers on top of him, Crosby gave officers his license plate number, make and model of the car and the name of the Chevrolet dealership where it was purchased.
When the woman who made the call, learned that Crosby was the owner of the car, she began to cry and she told an officer that “I did not mean to racially profile.”
The video was finally released after Crosby filed a lawsuit against the Evanston Police Department for excessive force and false arrest.
