(Scroll down for video) Two police officers were placed on leave after killing a homeowner.

Police in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, were called to the home at about 3:50 a.m., for a burglary in progress at a home in the 100 block of Finley Street in Larimer.

While Officers were in the process of attempting to gain entry into the residence, the homeowner mistook them for the burglar and fired shots in the direction of the officers who were on the front porch.

The officers defended themselves by returning fire as they thought that they were set up and that they were the targets for the shooting.

Sadly, 57-year-old Christopher Mark Thompkins was shot and killed. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police found the alleged burglar, who was identified as 23-year-old Juan Brian Jeter-Clark.

Jeter-Clark has been arrested and charged with criminal trespass.

As with standard protocol, the two officers who were involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave. There is an ongoing investigation with the oversight of the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office.

Jeter-Clark is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on $50,000 bond.
