Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced that a 20-year-old Brooklyn man has been charged with murder in the strangulation death of Karina Vetrano, 30, as she jogged
alone on a park trail near her Howard Beach home.
“This is truly a very sad case in which a beautiful and talented young woman senselessly lost her life. Thanks to the persistence of the hard-working detectives of the NYPD, assisted by members of my staff, the person allegedly responsible for her brutal murder finally has been brought to justice.
“At this time, he is being charged with intentional murder in the second degree, although the investigation is continuing and a grand jury may consider additional criminal charges when the case is presented to them,” Brown said.
The District Attorney added: “I extend my deepest condolences to the Vetrano family, particularly Karina’s parents, Phil and Kathy, and thank them for their vigilance throughout this lengthy investigation and assure them that the law enforcement community will work tirelessly to ensure that justice is done in this case.”
The District Attorney identified the defendant as Chanel R. Lewis, 20, of the East New York section of Brooklyn. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
Lewis is also facing a charge of sexual assault. He is being held in jail without bail.
According to the police investigation, Vetrano was jogging alone in Spring Creek Park at approximately 5:00 p.m., when she was confronted by Lewis who attacked and strangled her.
She was also raped.
Vetrano’s body was discovered by her father later that day, lying in a marshy area, approximately fifteen feet from a trail near 161 Avenue and 78 Street St.
During questioning, Lewis admitted to the rape and murder, saying that he hates white people.
