An elderly woman has died as a result of being bitten by bed bugs in her home, according to police in Pennsylvania.

Hanover police said that they have arrested 72-year-old Debora Butler, after she failed to prevent the bugs from biting 96-year-old Mary Stoner.

Butler has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and neglect of care after failing to protect the elderly woman from the bed bugs.

Butler was booked into jail, and her bail has been set at $50,000.

According to the criminal complaint, Butler ran a facility, where she took care of elderly and sick patients. When the facility shut down, Butler brought Stoner into her own home.

Earlier this month, Stoner was brought to hospital after her condition deteriorated. She died as a result of sepsis. An autopsy showed that Stoner died as a result of being bitten by numerous bed bugs.

Police searched Butler’s house, where they found thousands of bed bugs crawling everywhere. Butler claimed that she did not notice that the bed bugs were biting Stoner.

She also blamed Stoner for bringing the bed bugs into her home.
