A teenager who loves animals, was killed while trying to save one.

18-year-old Emily Sanchez of Apple Valley, California, was killed by a car while she was trying to rescue a cat that was hit by a car in which she was a passenger, police said.

Sanchez was as a passenger in a Toyota Camry that was reportedly driven by her mother.

As they drove southbound on a residential street at 10:50 p.m., the cat suddenly ran into the road and was hit by their car.

Emily was very concerned over the welfare of the cat so her
mother turned the vehicle around and drove back towards the animal that was lying on the road.

They did not pull over to the side. Instead, she stopped in the middle of the road and Emily exited the vehicle to check on the cat, which to her dismay, had died.

While standing in the lane, a Nissan Altima came from the opposite direction and hit her.

Sanchez was rushed to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where she died.

Police said that alcohol or drugs were not a factor in this tragic accident. The female driver of the other car stayed at the scene.
