(Scroll down for video) A teenager managed to call for help after getting run over by a train and losing both of his legs.
The teenager of Georgia, told police that he did not intend to hurt himself when he sat down on the tracks after a walk in the nearby park.
Officer Andy Blimline with the Lilburn Police Department, who was the first on the scene, said that he found 17-year-old Jacob Ohl of Gwinnett County, lying on his back.
He was conscious despite suffering severe injuries. Blimline said that he soon realized that the teen’s legs are no longer attached to his body.
Ohl was rushed to a hospital after he was struck by the freight train, but doctors were unable to reattach his legs.
Lilburn Police captain Thomas Bardugon said that Ohl, was lying alongside the train tracks with his feet draped over the tracks, and he was wearing his headphones when he was struck by the train at around 1:00 p.m.
The family set up a GoFundMe page, where they are collecting money to make their home wheelchair-accessible, installing support bars and retrofitting the bathroom.
“Our beautiful, talented son Jacob Ohl, had a terrible accident yesterday. He is in ICU. Still unconscious.
“He was hit by a train. Both his legs from the knee down were severed completely. The rest of his body and his mind appear to be completely unharmed.
“Jacob underwent surgery yesterday to clean his wounds and will finish the amputation today.
“Jacob is a thriving senior in high school at Brookwood High School. He is first chair in the school orchestra playing the stand-up bass and is also the bass player for the school’s jazz band.
“Jacob has two brothers, and an extended family that loves and admires him. He also just accepted a working position for a landscape company as an office assistant, where he was succeeding and seemed to be really enjoying his new job.
“Our family is reeling from this tragedy, but at the same time, we are so happy and feel so lucky that he is alive.”
The family has already collected over $33,000 of their $40,000 goal.
