(Scroll down for video) A man killed himself after demanding to have assault and property damage charges against him dropped.

Police in Johannesburg, South Africa, went looking for the 37-year-old man after his girlfriend opened a case against him with police.

When officers arrived at the girlfriend’s home, the man barricaded himself with his girlfriend behind furniture.

He told officers that he was going to kill the woman if they don’t drop the charges against him.

Commander Major-General Fred Kekana said that the man was charged with domestic violence related to an assault and property damage against his 31-year-old girlfriend.

Hostage negotiators were summoned to the scene in Soweto, to rescue the woman. After an eight-hour standoff, officers decided to go inside to rescue the woman.

However, at 6:00 p.m., when officers entered the home, the man shot his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself.

The man died at the scene. His girlfriend was taken to a hospital, where she is being treated for minor injuries that she suffered when the bullet grazed her.
