A man will face charges after cutting off the head of his pet snake.

People were shocked to learn that their neighbor kept a venomous snake as a pet and potentially putting them all at risk.

The New York Police Department said that 27-year-old Michael Larneard of Staten Island, was hospitalized after his poisonous East African gaboon viper, which is highly venomous and illegal to have as a pet, bit him.

Larneard told police that he reached into the snake’s tank to clean it at 11:00 p.m. on Friday, when the reptile slithered towards him, grabbed onto its hand and bit him.

In a panic, Larneard grabbed a knife and cut off the snake’s head as it clinged to his hand.

He was transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, for treatment. That hospital specializes in snake bites as it is the closest to the Bronx Zoo.

Luckily, doctors found that he was not injected with the snake’s venom.

Larneard was given a court summons for keeping illegal exotic animals. He could face a $500 fine.
