(Scroll down for video) A family is devastated over the loss of their daughter’s life after she was shot by police in California.

Police said that 16-year-old Ebbie Mondragon and her cousin Airieanna Cabrera, were riding in a stolen car that was driven by her boyfriend.

Fremont police detectives who were in Hayward, located the vehicle that was reported stolen, and it was wanted in connection with multiple armed robberies in Fremont and in the Bay Area.

Hayward Police Sgt. Ryan Cantrell said that when detectives, who were reportedly in a unmarked car, made contact with the driver, he rammed into their vehicle and began driving away.

The detectives responded by shooting at the driver while he was fleeing.

Unfortunately, the bullet hit the teenager, who according to her cousin, was three months pregnant. Mondragon died in the incident that occurred at about 5:20 p.m.

During a press conference, Cantrell said that what unfolded was a tragic incident, “but it’s one of the risks when you try to arrest high risk suspects.”

Mondragon’s cousin, Airieanna Cabrera, was arrested at the scene, but the driver managed to flee. Police are still looking for him. He was described by police as a black man, heavy build, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with short hair.
