A police officer was caught lying under oath in order to protect her boyfriend who was driving above the posted speed limit and without a license, according to police in the United Kingdom.

Now, the former special constable has been jailed for six months for perverting the course of justice after a two day trial at the Birmingham Crown Court.

35-year-old Nikki Clarke from Birmingham, had denied that she lied about a speeding ticket to protect her boyfriend, who was disqualified from driving.

According to the criminal complaint, Clarke’s black Lexus activated a speed camera on Yardley Wood Road, after it was traveling at a speed of 38 miles per hour in a 30 speed limit zone.

Clarke falsely claimed that she was driving the car on the fixed penalty notification form sent to her. She then ignored subsequent correspondence.

She also failed to attend court, following a summons, alleging that she had never received it. She was found guilty in her absence after failing to attend a second hearing.

After being found guilty of speeding, Clarke began to question the evidence, and said it could not have been her driving the car as she had been at work all day.

Ultimately, an image of the offending vehicle taken by the camera, showed the driver as Clarke’s boyfriend, who did not hold a driver’s license and was disqualified from driving.

Clarke then alleged that she was a victim of domestic abuse and had reported this several times to police, refusing to give evidence against her boyfriend as she was scared of him.

However, a search of police systems, revealed no such domestic violence reports.
