(Scroll down for video) A man who tried to get rid of ants in his parents’ home, ended up destroying it and killing several pets, according to police in Maine.

Old Orchard Beach police said that firefighters were called to the home after neighbors saw smoke coming out from the windows.

By the time firefighters extinguished the fire, the house was totally destroyed. 21-year-old Devon Doucette was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for second-degree burns and smoke inhalation.

The Harmon Street house was owned by his parents, Maurice and Barbara Doucette. Devon told investigators that while he was home alone, he noticed ants in the basement.

He tried to get rid of the ants by burning them. When he ignited matches, some flammable liquids caught on fire and quickly spread to the entire home.

The family’s two cats and a dog were killed in the blaze. No charges will be filed.

“Sadly, the wonderful Doucette family had a house fire yesterday and lost everything, including their loving pets. Devin was taken to the hospital with 2nd degree burns and is out now recovering.

“Thankfully, no one else was in the house so no other injuries. This family is just now starting on their long road on trying to get their life back. Barbara and Moe are avid members of the Old Orchard Beach community and are ALWAYS helping in any way they can.

“So many of us are hurting for them as no one deserves to lose everything. I am doing this so we can get them some clothes, food, place to stay, etc. Anything you can do would be more than greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your generosity,” friends of the family wrote on Go Fund Me.
