The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said that 36-year-old Carlos Garcia, shot and killed 7-year-old Yaxtel G. Tapia.

The incident unfolded on Sunday around 3:30 p.m. Garcia, Tapia and the girl’s mother were shopping together at the Capitola Mall, when the father became suicidal.

The girl’s mother called police to say that Garcia was threatening to commit suicide. Police officers who arrived at the scene, were directed to the family’s Kia Soul, which was parked outside Macy’s.

Inside, police found Garcia and Tapia suffering from gunshot wounds in an apparent murder suicide. Tapia’s mother did not disclose why her husband turned suicidal.

The girl attended the Mintie White Elementary School.

“On Sunday, we all learned of the tragic death of 7-year-old Yaxtel Tapia. Yaxtel’s death touched many of us in our community and the non-profit, Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (DSA) wanted to do something.

“The DSA graciously donated $1,000 to help support Yaxtel’s family in light of a situation no parent or loved one would ever hope to go through,” the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook.

Sheriff Jim Hart said: “As the father of four children, I can’t imagine the level of grief this family is going through right now. My thoughts and prayers are with the Tapia family and the community. Thank you to our Deputy Sheriff’s Association for stepping up and assisting Yaxtel’s family at a time when they need all of our support.”
