(Scroll down for video) A family’s vacation ended in tragedy when a father died while saving his daughter.

The man and his wife watched as their daughter and her friend were playing and having a good time in the water in the Gulf of Mexico, near Fort Morgan, Alabama.

Soon, 50-year-old Kevin Chitwood of Louisville, Kentucky, realized that his daughter and her friend got caught in a rip current.

Kevin and his wife Bobbie, jumped into the water to save their only child and her friend.

The mother, her 14-year-old daughter and the other girl, managed to get out of the water. However, the father was not so lucky.

He was pulled underwater and he drowned.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at about 7:00 p.m. on Monday, after receiving a call for a swimmer in distress. They performed CPR before transporting him to a hospital, where he died less than 24 hours later.

The mother, daughter and her friend were also taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released.

Chitwood was a member of the Turners Circus in Louisville, where his daughter is a performer.
