(Scroll down for video) Many people died and hundreds more have been injured after a mountain of garbage collapsed in Sri Lanka.

Colombo police said that the garbage dump collapsed on top hundreds of homes, causing severe damage.

So far, 20 people have been confirmed dead and hundreds were taken to hospital with injuries. Soldiers are still searching for many people who are still missing.

Officials expect the death toll to climb as more bodies will be pulled from the rubble of garbage. Soldiers are digging through the garbage with their bare hands.

Among the dead were four children. The garbage mountain collapsed on Friday, as the country was celebrating the new year.

145 homes have been totally destroyed as a result of the garbage collapse. 625 people were left homeless.
