Police in England, arrested the Roman Catholic priest for defrauding his parish that is located on St. Cuthbert’s Church in Chester-le-Street, by stealing money from them to buy gifts for his lover.

The Durham Crown Court heard how 70-year-old John Reid, fell in love with his housekeeper and he stole £50,000 ($64,000) over three months to buy her lavish gifts.

He reportedly bought homes for the woman and for her two grown daughters.

In court, Reid pleaded guilty to one count of fraud by abuse of position.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, which was suspended. He was also ordered to make restitution and return the £50,000 the church.

After his arrest, Reid was fired from his position. His successor told the court that he found the church “dirty and littered with alcohol bottles.”
