A distraught woman who tried to end her life, was sentenced to serve time in prison for slashing her wrists at a shopping mall, according to police in Malaysia.

Petaling Jaya police have arrested 24-year-old Yew Kah Sin, after being treated at a hospital following her attempted suicide.

She was charged with one count of attempting suicide. In court, Magistrate Salamiah Salleh convicted the woman of the charge and sentenced her to three months in prison.

Sin got an option to pay $500 in lieu of the serving time in prison.

The judge told the defendant that no matter how many problems she was facing, suicide should never be an option as it is against the law.

According to the police investigation, Sin, who was unemployed, entered a beauty salon at the shopping center in Bandar Sunway, at around 5:30 p.m.

She pulled out a knife and slashed her wrists. Sin was rushed to the hospital, where she was treated and received 30 stitches.

When Sin was discharged from the hospital, she was handed over to police custody to face charges.

Doctors slammed the decision of the court, saying that suicidal people need to be treated in medical facilities instead of putting them behind bars.
