17-year-old Martaevious Santiago of Florida, called 911 and told a dispatcher that he accidentally shot his younger sister, Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.

When officers arrived, they learned that Santiago fatally shot his 13-year-old sister, Tedra King.

Santiago, who has a history of gun violence, shot his sister in the back of the head moments after she hugged him on his 17th birthday, police said.

Santiago was in the kitchen of his home when his sister came in and gave him a hug in celebration of his birthday.

As King turned to walk away, Santiago, who was holding a loaded semi-automatic pistol, allegedly aimed it at his sister and
pulled the trigger.

Santiago told police that he accidentally shot his sister while playing around with her.

Santiago’s stepfather, Vernon Williams, said that he does not blame his stepson for the accidental shooting.

Santiago, who had been arrested 18 times before the shooting mostly for robberies, was charged with manslaughter.

Williams and his wife, who have nine children in their blended family, are no strangers to gun violence.

A few months ago, Santiago was shot in the leg. Less than a year earlier, Santiago’s younger brother Martwan, was reportedly shot in the spine and was left paralyzed from the waist down.
