A public health scare unfolded at a Macy’s department store after a man used a hypodermic needle to stab several security guards, according to police in New York.

The New York Police Department said that they have arrested 25-year-old Robert Percodani of Manhattan, after being accused of assaulting four security guards at the Macy’s located on Herald Square.

Percodani was charged with multiple counts of robbery and assault. He was booked into jail, where he is being held without bail.

According to the police investigation, Percodani entered the Macy’s department store on Wednesday around 3:00 p.m. A loss prevention officer spotted Percodani attempting to steal several Michael Kors handbags.

When he was confronted, Percodani yelled that he had AIDS and hepatitis C, and pulled out a hypodermic needle. As he was being tackled to the ground, Percodani stabbed three security guards with the needle and bit a fourth person.

Percodani was rushed to the Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was treated for a psychiatric episode. The security guards underwent testing for HIV and hepatitis, and are anxiously awaiting the results.
