(Scroll down for video) A man broke into a home, where he forced a mother and her young daughter to strip, according to police in South Carolina.

Lexington said that they have arrested 34-year-old Nathaniel “Nate” Antron Hunter, after trying to rape the 6-year-old girl and shot her mother who was trying to protect her.

In court, Hunter has been convicted of burglary in the first degree, attempted murder, criminal sexual conduct with a minor in the third degree and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Circuit Court Judge Thomas W. Cooper Jr. sentenced Hunter to 45 years in prison. He will not be eligible for parole due to the violent nature of the crimes.

According to the criminal complaint, the girl and her mother were awakened during the night around 3:00 a.m., to find Hunter in the bedroom.

Hunter was dressed in black, and was wearing a ski mask and a hooded sweatshirt to conceal his face. He ordered the mother and the 6-year-old girl to remove their clothes at gunpoint.

Once the girl took off her clothes, her mother lunged at the intruder in an attempt to remove the weapon. A fight ensued and the mother was shot five times in multiple areas of her body.

Despite bleeding profusely, the mother continued to restrain Hunter, to prevent him from reaching her daughter. She managed to remove his ski mask and hooded sweatshirt as she forced him out of the residence.

Hunter then fled the scene. The mother and her daughter were able to reach a neighbor’s apartment, where they called police.

By the time paramedics arrived, the mother fell unconscious on the neighbors’ floor. She was transported to the Palmetto Richland Trauma Unit, where she underwent life-saving surgery.

Hunter was caught after police lifted DNA from the ski mask and it matched the suspect who was in a database due to a previous crime he committed.
