(Scroll down for video) A longtime police officer lost his job after he was caught with stolen meat down his pants.

36-year-old Matthew “Matt” Barthelmass of Des Peres, Missouri, worked in law enforcement for 15 years.

He has been with the St. John Police Department for 10 years. Two years ago, Officer Barthelmass made headlines for his heroic act, saving a man from a burning building.

However, his career ended after he was caught shoplifting meat at Dierbergs Market at 1080 Lindemann Rd.

According to the police report, a loss prevention officer kept an eye out for the Barthelmass, because he was accused of shoplifting at this grocery store before.

The loss prevention officer told police that the store has video showing Barthelmass shoplifting. This time, he spotted the officer going to the meat aisle and taking hamburgers.

He then saw the officer place the meat into his pants and covering the bulge with an oversized sweater.

When Barthelmass paid for some items at the checkout counter but not for the meat, the loss prevention officer stopped him.

Barthelmass allegedly asked the loss prevention officer not to call police as he worked in law enforcement, and he could loss his job and livelihood over the incident.

However, since the theft was over $30, the loss prevention officer said he had no choice but to do his job and call police.

Barthelmass now faces multiple charges of shoplifting.
