(Scroll down for video) A woman dated a man for a short time before breaking up with him for allegedly being abusive.

24-year-old Mirza Tatlic of San Jose, California, who police said suffered from mental illness, was very upset over the breakup with his girlfriend Rachel Prabhu.

Prabhu took out a restraining order when Tatlic did not stop harassing her. However, that did not stop him from taking revenge against her by killing her parents.

Tatlic broke into the family’s home at 9:00 p.m., and shot the father, Naren Prabhu, who was a Silicon Valley tech executive. He worked at Juniper Networks for the past 10 years.

He then killed Rachel’s mother. Her 20-year-old brother managed to run out of the home and called police.

Meanwhile, Tatlic took Rachel’s 13-year-old brother hostage and forced him to call Rachel so he can speak to her.

Police said that Tatlic knew that she will not pick up the phone for him, but she did pick up for her younger brother.

Tatlic held the boy as a human shield during an ensuing two-hour standoff. Eventually, he walked to the window with the boy and allegedly pointed a gun at an officer.

The officer fired a shot, killing Tatlic.
