A drug smuggler from Canada, thought that he found the perfect spot to hide his marijuana from police, but it did not take long for border agents to find his stash, according to police in New York.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Rainbow Bridge arrested the Canadian citizen after discovering about 12 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle he was driving.

CBP officers at the Rainbow Bridge encountered 31-year-old Daniel Hancock from Niagara Falls, Ontario. The primary officer became suspicious of the driver and referred the vehicle for secondary inspection.

A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded the discovery of 12 pounds of marijuana concealed in a spare tire. The value of the marijuana was estimated at approximately $28,700.

The subject was arrested and the narcotics were seized.

“CBP officers are trained to identify indicators warranting further inspection of individuals arriving at the U.S. border,” said Acting Port Director Cary Frieling.

“Our officers are the first line of defense for this country, and finding narcotics is one of CBP’s critical responsibilities in securing and protecting the homeland,” Frieling added.

Niagara Falls Police Department officers took custody of the suspect along with the illegal narcotics.
