12-year-old girl killed after gun went off while playfully wrestling with adult family member

(Scroll down for video) A fun filled family gathering ended in tragedy when a girl died.

Now, the girl’s family, friends, classmates and all those who knew her, are grieving the sudden loss.

12-year-old Kayla Mendenhall of Leeds, Alabama, was visiting her family members with her mother when she was playfully wrestling with an adult family member.

Police said that while doing so, a gun which was being carried by the adult, discharged, hitting Mendenhall in the thigh.

The incident occurred at about 8:15 p.m., in a home located in the 4100 block of Oak Trail Way. Mendenhall was transported to Children’s of Alabama.

She succumbed to he injuries and was pronounced dead at about 9:25 p.m.

Leeds Police Chief Ron Reaves said that police are investigating the shooting. At this time, it seems to have been a tragic accident. So far, no charges have been filed.

Mendenhall was in the 6th grade at Leeds Middle School. School officials created a GoFundMe page to help the family with funeral expenses. They have already hit their goal of raising $12,000.
