Wall collapse kills 26 wedding guests and injures 28 others

(Scroll down for video) A festive wedding ceremony turned sour after a wall collapsed, killing many guests and injuring others, according to police in India.

Bharatpur police said that the wall of the wedding venue collapsed following a period of a strong dust storm in the area on Wednesday.

As the bride, groom, family members and other guests were partying, the 90 feet long wall collapsed. The wall was 13 feet high.

Many wedding guests became trapped under the collapsed wall. By the time emergency responders freed all those who were trapped under the collapsed wall, 26 people have died.

An additional 28 people suffered injuries, including 15 whose conditions remain serious. Among the dead were four children.

Police have arrested one of the managers of the wedding hall on a charge of causing death by negligence.

The Prime Minister of India, issued a statement on the incident.

“The incident in Bharatpur, has pained me beyond words. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. I hope the injured recover soon,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter.
