(Scroll down for video) A teacher sparked outrage after ripping off the headscarf of a girl who was misbehaving in his class, according to police in New York.

The New York Police Department said that they are investigating the incident in which Oghenetega Edah, 31, of the Bronx, pulled of the headscarf of the 8-year-old girl.

The incident unfolded last Tuesday, at the Bennington School, PS 76.

According to the investigation, Safa Alzockary was misbehaving, and she sat in the teacher’s chair. Edah repeatedly asked the girl to get up from his chair, but she ignored his request.

He then warned the girl that he will pull of her hijab if she stayed in his chair. Alzockary ignored the teacher’s request.

Edah then forcefully pulled off the headscarf. The girl complained that her eye was injured and she was taken to the Jacobi Hospital.

Doctors discharged the girl as her eye did not seem to have been injured. Alzockary said that the incident was very scary.

Alzockary father Mohamed, who came to the United States from Yemen, said that he was shocked such a thing can happen in New York.

New York Department of Education spokesperson Michael Aciman said that this behavior is completely unacceptable. He confirmed that Edah was fired immediately.
