A jealous mother was arrested after beating her son for making a Mother’s Day card for her mother and not her.

Now, the South Carolina mother is facing charges of cruelty to children.

Spartanburg police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Amos Street at 6:40 p.m. When they arrived, officers found a grandmother standing outside with two children, one of whom was crying.

The grandmother told the officers that her daughter, the mother of the crying 6-year-old boy, beat him over the head and his body several times.

The mother was identified as 30-year-old Shontrell Murphy.

Police said that during the investigation, the boy’s 8-year-old sister told them that their mother was upset because the child made a Mother’s Day card for their grandmother and not her.

When Murphy realized that the card was not for her, she ripped it up and she beat the boy.

Officers said that they found the handwritten card ripped to shreds at the scene. Murphy admitted to slapping her son, but according to a police report “she did not believe it was in a hard or violent manner.”

The children reportedly told police that their mother beat them frequently and that they were afraid of her.

The boy was taken to a hospital in an ambulance for evaluation.
