A health department had to be shut down after employees discovered bed bugs in the facility, according to health officials in North Carolina.

Carteret County Health Director Dave Jenkins said that on Thursday, employees found bed bugs crawling in waiting room at their facility located on Bridges Street in Morehead City.

Jenkins called the incident ironic. Pest control was called to the health department, and the area was sprayed.

Officials first thought about reopening the department on Friday, but out of abundance of caution, the facility will remain shuttered at least until Monday.

On Monday morning, pest control will check to see whether the bed bugs were exterminated before reopening the facility to employees and the public.

Jenkins said that he believes this to be an isolated incident.
