(Scroll down for video) A family was horrified to learn that their grandchildren were served alcohol during dinner.

Police in North Carolina, were called after a 3-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, after drinking alcoholic beverages at Applebee’s, according to police.

McKenneth Kirkman Sr. of Fayetteville, said that he and his wife took family members to at Applebee’s located at 5225 Ramsey Street, to celebrate a birthday after church services.

The pastor and his family, who do not drink alcohol, said that they ordered virgin pina coladas for his 13-year-old son K.J. and 3-year-old granddaughter Bailey.

However, the drink was not virgin as it contained alcohol.

After the 3-year-old girl was more than halfway through her drink, her teenage uncle began drinking his pina colada and he immediately noticed that something was not right.

He told his father that the drink tasted sour. When pastor Kirkman tried the drink, he tasted the alcohol.

Both kids were taken to a hospital for observation and were discharged after a few hours.

Fayetteville Police Department Sgt. P. Davis said the officers responded to the restaurant and interviewed the staff.

He added that there seemed to be a misunderstanding between the waitress and bartender. “We don’t believe there was ill intent,” Davis said.

While the case is being investigated, it has been revealed that this is not the first time a child was served alcohol at Applebee’s.

The same Applebee’s was cited in 2015, for serving an alcoholic drink to a 5-year-old child.

Applebee’s released a statement: “We take the service of alcohol very seriously, and we’re sorry that this mistake was made. We commit to making any necessary changes to prevent an incident like this from occurring again.”
