(Scroll down for video) Parents rushed to a school to pick up their children after learning that a boy came to class with a loaded gun in his backpack.

Police were called to the first grade class at Moss Bluff Elementary School in Louisiana, at about 8:00 a.m., on a report of a shot fired.

According to Calcasieu Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers, a boy brought the loaded handgun to school. As he pulled the gun out of his backpack, it fell to the ground.

Another child grabbed the firearm and it discharged, shooting a 7-year-old boy in the stomach.

The victim was rushed to the Lafayette General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. The victim is now in the pediatric ICU, where his condition is being monitored.

Sheriff Tony Mancuso said that due to his age, the boy who brought the gun to school cannot be charged, but they are looking into bringing charges against the adults who left the gun in the reach of the young boy.
