(Scroll down for video) An elderly man drowned on his birthday after getting sucked underwater following a single vehicle crash into a fire hydrant, according to police in Florida.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that 89-year-old Robert Dreyer, was driving his vehicle when it veered off the road and crashed into a fire hydrant.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday, on Tavistock Drive and Crelford Way in Melbourne. After crashing his Mercedes into the fire hydrant, Dreyer stepped out of his vehicle.

The water that was gushing out of the broken fire hydrant then sucked Dreyer into a shallow hole and the pressure did not allow him to stand up.

A good Samaritan rushed to help Dreyer, and called for police.

Dreyer was rushed to the Viera Hospital, where he died. Dreyer turned 89 on the day of his death.
