(Scroll down for video) Police in Texas, promised to give a boy all the help he needed after he was left orphaned and traumatized when his father was killed.

The father brought his 7-year-old son along when he tried to break into a home in the 6300 block of Aspen Farm in San Antonio, around 1:40 p.m.

39-year-old James A. Carney of New Braunfels, told his son to wait in his white car, which was parked in the driveway of the victim’s home.

Carney had no idea that he will never make it back alive and that he will never see his son again.

According to police, Carney tried to enter the home through a window in the front of the house.

Unbeknown to him, the female homeowner, who is in her 40s, slept in that room.

She woke up by the noise from the intruder and grabbed her gun. Police said that she fired at least two rounds. She then called police and Carney was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

When police began their investigation, they looked into Carney’s car and were shocked to find his 7-year-old son inside.

His obituary states: “James A. Carney III of New Braunfels, TX. formerly of Hasbrouck Heights was an Army veteran.

“He leaves behind his fiancee Cheryl Cetnarowicz. He was a devoted father to their son James A. Carney IV. Loving son of James A. Carney, Jr. and Karen (nee Feliciano) Carney. Dear brother of Sharon Celauro and her husband Kenneth. Cherished uncle to Jared, Erin, Ashleigh and Jenna. Also survived by his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.”
