High ranking police officer helped smugglers bring into country 30,000 pounds of drugs

A high-ranking police officer is facing numerous years behind bars after being accused of helping drug smugglers ad taking bribes, according to police in Norway.

Oslo police said that they have arrested 60-year-old Eirik Jensen, after receiving a tip that the high ranking officer of the unit that was supposed to fight organized crime, worked with drug gang leader 50-year-old Gjermund Cappelen.

Jensen has been charged with aggravated corruption.

Prosecutors asked the Oslo District Court to sentence the former police officer to 21 years in prison, which is the maximum sentence allowed in the country.

According to the police investigation, Jensen was the leader of the police unit that fought organized crime. At some point, Jensen began a working relationship with Cappelen, who was known as the hashish baron.

After Jensen received nearly $300,000 in bribes, he worked with Cappelen to import 30,000 pounds of hashish into the country.

As a result of the successful smuggling operation, Cappelen earned millions of dollars. Cappelen is facing 18 years in prison after agreeing to testifying against Jensen.
