(Scroll down for video) Police in Florida, are investigating the death of a prosecutor who was described as a “wonderful lawyer and great colleague,” by the The U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The federal prosecutor was found dead on a Miami beach.

Hollywood police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said that 37-year-old Beranton J. Whisenant Jr., was discovered near the water by a passerby in Hollywood Beach at 4:30 a.m.

The prosecutor had suffered major head injuries, which according to police, are consistent with a gunshot wound.

They have not yet revealed whether his death is being treated as a murder, suicide or accident.

Whisenant was dressed in a business shirt and black pants when they found his body. Nothing was stolen and all of his personal items were still on him when his body was discovered.

Whisenant joined the United States Attorney’s Office in Miami’s crime unit in January. Court records show that he had been handling several visa and passport fraud cases at the time of his death.
