Man dies after stealing knife from Lowe’s and stabbing himself with it while fleeing from police

A Florida man lost his life after he was impaled by a knife that he was accused of stealing from a store.

According to police, 53-year-old Jerry Ellis Word of Lakeland, entered the Lowe’s Home Improvement store and went to the aisle, where the knife were.

He removed one knife from it’s package and concealed it. He then tried to leave the store without paying for it.

Lowe’s loss prevention staff tried to stop Word, but he waved the knife in a threatening manner and fled through the parking lot.

The Plant City Police Department responded to a shoplifting call around 6:40 p.m., at the Lowe’s store at 2801 James L. Redman Parkway.

Officer saw Word running towards an apartment complex. Police found him collapsed behind the apartment complex building.

According to the police report, Word was impaled with the knife in the upper arm area.

He was taken to a hospital and died shortly thereafter, police said. Police do not know if the act was intentional or an accident.

Word had a long criminal history, including criminal arson and drug charges. He served three separate nine-year sentences in prison.
