Man dies on way home from hospital after ambulance crashed

(Scroll down for video) A man who was being driven home from a hospital died after the ambulance that was transporting him ran off the road and crashed, according to police in New York.

The Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office said that 64-year-old Chris Aernecke, was fatally injured when the ambulance ran off the road while it was taking him home from the Albany Medical Center.

Aernecke, who was battling cancer, was taken to the hospital after suffering from an infection and high fever. Following successful treatment, Aernecke was discharged.

Mohawk Ambulance Service responded to the hospital and arranged for Aernecke to be taken home. When the ambulance was traveling on Rt. 20 on Wednesday around 5:00 p.m., it ran off the road and hit a tree.

Aernecke died at the scene. An autopsy confirmed that Aernecke died as a result of the crash. The driver of the ambulance, 21-year-old Cody Bryans, was taken to the Ellis Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Emergency medical technician Elyssa Bevilacqua, 20, was taken to the Albany Medical Center, where she is still being treated.

The ambulance was damaged and impounded. The cause of the accident is unknown.
