(Scroll down for video) An elderly woman in Virginia, who was looking for a companion, was attacked hours after adopting a dog.

Family, friends and neighbors were shocked to learn of the horrific death of the 90-year-old woman.

Amber Patterson said that her grandmother who lives with her family, was in the room with the 50 pound, 1-year-old American Pitbull Terrier, when she was attacked.

Patterson’s mother came running when she heard the 90-year-old woman screaming for help.

Patterson said that the dog pushed her grandmother to the ground and mauled her. Her mother tried to stop the attack by hitting the dog with a hammer, but it did not stop.

The attack lasted for about five minutes, the family said.

Police were called to the home on Bunker Hill Lane in Pembroke Manor in Virginia Beach at 7:30 p.m. The elderly woman was rushed to a hospital, where she underwent several surgeries, including an arm amputation.

The family believed that their beloved grandmother would survive the dog attack, but sadly, she died of her injuries.

Police said that they are investigating the incident and charges may be filed against the Forever Home Rehabilitation Center, where the grandmother got the dog just hours before the attack.

Forever Home Rehabilitation Center promises to rehabilitate vicious dogs before putting them up for adoption.

However, a former worker said that the vicious dogs are not always rehabilitated, but are sometimes put up for adoption one or two weeks after coming to the shelter.

Virginia Beach Animal Control took the dog and they will decided whether it should be euthanized.
