Smuggler hides buckets of live venomous snakes and frogs in his luggage

A smuggler attempted to fly from Brazil to Russia, carrying a large quantity of live poisonous snakes and frogs in his luggage, according to police in the Netherlands.

Customs officials at the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, arrested the man, who was not identified, after agents uncovered snakes, frogs, cockroaches and lizards in buckets inside his luggage.

The man was charged with animal cruelty as experts determined that the creatures suffered serious harm and injuries as a result of being kept in plastic buckets.

In total, customs agents seized 26 highly venomous lancehead vipers, 10 poisonous frogs, 33 cockroaches and a number of rare lizards.

Nine of the creatures were on the endangered species list. All have been handed over to an animal shelter for care.

The man from Russia, traveled to Brazil, where he collected the creatures to bring them home with him to Russia. He was caught at the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, while trying to catch a connecting flight.
