A woman in the United Kingdom, said that she was left “mortified” after trying to do a good deed and help a homeless man.

33-year-old mother of two children Claire Varin, was at McDonald’s in Halifax, when she saw an unshaven man with a backpack sitting at a nearby table without a meal.

She watched as he was eating ketchup straight from the dispenser that was on the table, and thought that he was homeless and hungry.

“I thought that only desperation could lead someone to eat ketchup,” she said.

Varin said that the man was sitting at his table for about 10 minutes with no food except for the ketchup. She assumed that he came into the McDonald’s restaurant to warm up as it was cold outside.

Varin decided to be a good Samaritan, and buy the man a meal.

However, her “act of kindness” went wrong. As she placed the meal in front of the hungry man, a staff member also approached the table and an order in front of him.

The staff member apologized to him for the long wait.
Varin of West Yorkshire, said: “I was mortified. I felt like I was going to die of shame.”

She did not stay to see the man’s reaction to her actions. She did not stay to eat her meal either.

“I just left the store as fast as I could,” she said.

Linda Ramsden posted a comment to the story and said: “He may not have been homeless, but just down on his luck, mentally ill, depressed, lonely. Whatever but that doesn’t take away from an act of kindness. Never be embarrassed by that.”
