(Scroll down for video) A man will spend years behind bars after causing a forest fire that killed an innocent man, according to police in Spain.

El Paso police said that they have arrested 27-year-old Scott Verdine Stumpf of Germany, after being accused of causing the forest fire by burning dirty toilet paper.

Stumpf appeared at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife court, where he pleaded guilty to negligence causing death.

He was sentenced to serve 3 and a half years in prison, and was ordered to pay $2 million to restore the forest and for the victims family.

According to the police investigation, Stumpf was touring the forest in the Canary Island, where he spent time in a cave. One day, Stumpf relieved himself in the woods, and made a fire to burn dirty toilet paper.

Stumpf left the scene before making sure that the fire was out.

Unfortunately, the burning toilet paper ignited a forest fire that consumed 5,000 acres. More than 300 homes had to be evacuated and hundreds of firefighters battled the blaze.

Forest Ranger Francisco Jose Santana, 54, was killed while fighting the fire. Santana left behind his wife and 5 children.
