(Scroll down for video) Albino children in Tanzania, have to be closely guarded by their parents as many people are trying to harm them.
The body parts of Albino children are very much sought after for the use in witchcraft. In Africa, people with albinism are seen as ghosts and their body parts are believed to be good for mystical powers.
Witch doctors often sell potions made from bone or skin from Albino children. These unlicensed doctors tell people that they can be healed or have better luck if they bring a limb of an albino child.
Those people then pay others to steal body parts of Albino children. The president promised harsh punishment for those who injure Albino children. Police have reportedly arrested 225 witchcraft healers.
Sadly, people hack off their body parts and sell them for a lot of money. Five Albino children were brought to the United States to get prosthetics.
These children were victims of people who hacked of their arms, hands and/or fingers and some of their teeth were viciously pulled out of their mouths.
Some Albino children are killed for their body parts and others, like these boys, are left with life changing injuries.
All of the children were shy and afraid of people when they arrived to the U.S., as they learned to never trust anyone because many people are looking to profit off of their limbs.
One victim, 16-year-old Emmanuel Festo, has a difficult time talking as some of his teeth were stolen and the suspects tried to pull out his tongue. His attackers chopped off one arm and the fingers of the other hand.
6-year-old Baraka Cosmas Rusambo, Mwigulu Matonange, 12, Pendo Sengerema, 16, Kabula Nkalango, 18, all had missing limbs.
The boys came to the U.S. for three months in order to get fitted with prosthetics. They were also seen by a therapist to help them heal from the trauma they suffered.
The trip was paid for by the Global Medical Relief Fund, a New York-based charity organization. The boys are staying in Staten Island, New York, while they receive their treatment in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“Monday was an emotional day as we welcomed five amputee children with albinism from Tanzania. We could not have done this without the help of many volunteers, specially the staff and Directors of Under the Same Sun.
“Special thanks to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection at JFK International Airport, for their ongoing support in assisting our children and their families get through the immigration process with ease,” the organization wrote on their website.
