(Scroll down for video) A mayor of a city in Virginia, admitted to living a double life after he was freed from jail.

In an interview with NBCWashington, 51-year-old former Fairfax Mayor Scott Silverthorne spoke about his arrest and the double life he was living.

In March, the mayor pleaded guilty to distributing meth in Fairfax County Circuit Court. He was remanded into prison until sentencing.

This week, he was sentenced to five years in prison. However, all but three months were suspended. He was then immediately released on time served.

Silverthorne said that he was a drug addict for 14 years. He admits to doing drugs while he was serving as mayor.

“The reality was that I never let it interfere with my city duties,” Silverthorne claimed.

Silverthorne explained that before he was busted with the drugs, he meet two men on a gay dating website. The men arranged to meet at a hotel to engage in group sex.

Silverthorne claimed that the men asked him to bring less than a gram of the drugs and he agreed. When he handed over the meth, he was immediately arrested.

Silverthorne soon learned that the men did not want to have sex with him. Instead, they were undercover detectives.

During the 30 minute interview, Silverthorne said that from the age of 6, he knew that he was different.

He is gay, but because in his generation gay people were not very much accepted, Silverthorne said he suppressed the feelings, and this “leads to a lof self destructive behavior.”

Silverthorne was also a substitute teacher while he was a drug addict.
