A homeless man in Turkey, was surprised when a judge sentenced him to house arrest.

Istanbul police said that they have arrested 31-year-old Baris Alkan, after being accused of selling drugs outside the city bus station.

Prosecutors asked the Istanbul Fifth Criminal Court of Peace to sentence to Alkan, but the judge refused, opting instead for house arrest.

The defendant’s lawyer, Oktay Ozer pleaded with the judge to reconsider the sentence as his client was homeless.

The judge ruled that since Alkan gave his address as the bus station, he must serve the sentence on the street outside the bus station.

Ozer vowed to appeal the ruling. Meanwhile, Alkan is living on the street outside the bus station under the watchful eyes of police officers patrolling the area.

Alkan is unable to leave the area without permission from the court.
