People were surprised to see a man with a Ferrari begging for free gas until they learned that the luxury vehicle was stolen, according to police in California.

On Sunday, San Rafael Police officers were dispatched to Francisco Boulevard East at Shoreline Parkway, regarding a suspicious person who was associated with a 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB.

The suspect had approached someone in the area and asked for gas money. Another caller reported that the suspect was acting strangely and appeared to be pouring gasoline on the Ferrari.

Officers Delzell and Chiu arrived on the scene and contacted the suspect, who claimed to be the owner of the vehicle.

He advised officers that the vehicle had been in the shop for service for two years, and he had recently picked it up.

The officers were skeptical of the man’s claims due, in part, to his erratic behavior and vague answers to questions.

The man claimed that he had documentation proving his ownership of the vehicle in his backpack. He gave officers permission to search the backpack.

Officer Delzell found the key to the Ferrari, a key to an additional Ferrari, but no ownership papers. The officers requested a representative from the Ferrari dealership respond to the scene.

When the representative arrived, he confirmed the vehicle as having been stolen from the San Rafael service center. The Ferrari was valued at approximately $245,000.

Rocky Jimenez, 36, of Georgia was arrested for vehicle theft, possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property.

He was booked into the Marin County Jail, and his bail has been set at $50,000.
