(Scroll down for video) Employees at a hospital were shocked to see a mother trying to kill her sick son, according to police in North Carolina.

Charlotte police said that they have arrested 32-year-old Maggie Dixon, after being accused of attempting to kill her 1-year-old son four times over a period of 15 minutes.

Dixon has been charged with attempted murder and child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. She was booked into jail, and her bail has been set at $300,000.

A judge banned Dixon from having any contact with her son.

The Department of Social Services handed over custody of the boy to his father.

According to the police investigation, the 1-year-old boy was brought to the Levine Children’s Hospital, after her mother believed that he was suffering from pneumonia.

While Dixon was alone in a room with her son, she put her hands around his neck and choked him. She then used a pillow in an attempt to smother him.

Dixon repeated her actions four times over the course of 15 minutes.

When nurses were alerted to the boy’s abnormal vital sign, they reviewed security surveillance footage and saw Dixon trying to kill her son.

Hospital security guards removed Dixon from the room and called police.
