First responders were called to the scene of an accident that involved a casualty.
Police and emergency workers in New Jersey, initially thought that the man died from wounds that he suffered as a result of crashing into a commercial vehicle.
However, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said that Hamilton Township police officer Thomas White, 44, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
White, who was off duty at the time, shot himself while he was driving shortly after 3:00 p.m.
Thankfully, the driver of the commercial vehicle was not injured.
White was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a suicide. White most recently worked as a middle school officer and the children who knew him as “Officer Friendly,” were in shock over his death.
His death comes just three days after a Woolwich Township police officer was killed in a car accident.
Off-duty officer Charlie Amadei, 33, died while his mother, wife and three children were treated at a hospital.
In that case, police said that 19-year-old Jay Scerbo, was driving a pickup truck when he failed to heed a stop sign at the intersection, and he hit a minivan around 4 p.m. The police officer was a passenger in the minivan.
