(Scroll down for video) Two young kids suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a pit bull while secured in car seats in their mother’s minivan, according to police in Pennsylvania.

At about 5:00 p.m., on Monday, the Lancaster City Police responded to the 700 block of Lafayette Street, for a reported medical call.

911 callers indicated that a loose dog was attacking two young children.

When the officers arrived, they found the children, a 2-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, had been transported to Lancaster General Hospital by their mother, and the dog had been secured by its owner.

The children were treated at the Lancaster General Hospital for serious injuries received in this attack and then transported to Hershey Medical Center for further treatment.

According to the police investigation, while the mother was securing her children into the car seats of her minivan, the pit bull ran out of a secured yard and attacked the children.

Neighbors tried to pull the dog off the children, but the pit bull kept running back to the minivan and biting the kids. After a few minutes, the mother managed to lock the minivan and drive away.

She immediately went to the hospital. The children are still being treated and are in serious but stable condition. The mother suffered scratches while trying to get the dog off her children.

The animal in this incident is a 66 pound, 5-year-old male Pit Bull terrier. The dog had been in a fenced-in backyard of a home on the 700 block of High Street.

At some point, the dog managed to break through the fence.

The pit bull was seized by animal control officers. So far, no charges have been filed.

The owner of the dog has been cooperating with investigators and officials, and has agreed to have the dog euthanized.
