A man and a woman beat a homeless man who was sleeping under a bridge before burning his body, according to police in Germany.

Cologne police have arrested the two suspects, who were not identified, after being accused of killing the homeless man after allegedly sexually assaulting one of them.

In court, both suspects have been convicted of homicide and were sentenced to serve 7 and a half years in prison.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to the scene of a fire under a bridge. When police and firefighters looked closer, they realized that there was a man in the flames.

Paramedics who responded to the scene, confirmed that the 29-year-old homeless man was dead. The man had been sleeping under the bridge for some time.

The investigation revealed that two other homeless people were responsible for his death.

The 37-year-old man and the 31-year-old woman kicked the homeless man in the face and stomach until he fell unconscious.

The suspects then burned the body to destroy evidence of the crime. During questioning, the suspect told police that they acted in self defense as the victim sexually assaulted the woman.
