35-year-old Shannon Nichole Macleod of Steilacoom, Washington, had spent the day with her children at a beach in Tacoma.

When she was ready to leave and loading up the van in the
parking lot, her 6-year-old son, who was already in the minivan, put the gear in reverse.

MacLeod, who was eight months pregnant, was trapped under the vehicle.

Firefighters used equipment to lift the woman’s vehicle and rushed the mother of to a hospital. Sadly, she did not make it and died on the way to the hospital.

When they arrived at the hospital, doctors were able to perform an emergency C-section and save the baby, who was taken to Seattle Children’s Hospital. However, the baby who was named Joseph like his father, did not survive.

The 6-year-old boy and other children who were inside the minivan at the time of the accident, were not injured.

This tragedy comes months after the family’s home was destroyed by a fire. They have been living in a motel since then.

The Macleod family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with the funeral expenses. Nathan Macleod wrote: “I am raising money to not only help support my siblings, but to help with my mom’s funeral cost.

“My mom loved her kids more than anything. Shannon Nichole Macleod was the best thing to ever happen in my life. She gave birth to me at the young age of 15. All she cared about was her kids, did everything to take care of them no matter what. We need all the help and support we can get. Please help if you can, I don’t ask for a lot.”

Macleod left behind her boyfriend of 18 years, Joseph Verplank, five sons and one daughter.
